The Leeds and Liverpool Canal runs for 127 miles, making it the longest canal in Northern England. Unlike the other trans-Pennine canals, the Leeds and Liverpool Canal was never abandoned, remaining open for navigation throughout the last century.
The towpath is only a 5 minute walk from The Shippon with pleasant walks to both Parbold and Burscough. Canal-side pubs provide welcome resting places for the weary walker.
There are numerous sites worthy of further exploration including flights of locks and historic Wigan Pier less than 10 miles away.
