Southport, just 8 miles from The Shippon, is home to the highest concentration of championship links courses and is known as England’s Golfing Capital.

Apart from the superb links at The Royal Birkdale there are also another five championship standard courses all within easy reach of the town. 

Hillside, Formby, Hesketh, Southport and Ainsdale, and West Lancashire Golf Clubs are all superb courses and provide a challenge to the most accomplished golfer. 

The Royal Birkdale Golf Club

One of Britain’s finest golf clubs, it has been voted No 1 course in Britain and is among the best in the world.  Having previously hosted two Ryder Cups, the Walker and Curtis Cups, the Women’s British Open, The Amateur Championship and on eight occasions the Open Championship, The Royal Birkdale hosted The Open in 2008 and is the venue for  the Women’s British Open in 2010.

Hillside Golf Club

Hillside is widely regarded as the finest course not to have staged an Open Championship.  Greg Norman once said the back nine was “the best in Britain”. It has hosted several major amateur events, including the Amateur Championship and will again host it in 2011.

Formby Golf Club

The club is unique in Britain because inside the boundary of its own course is the completely independent Formby Ladies Golf Club.  Formby has hosted three Amateur Championships.  In 1984 Jose Maria Olazabal beat Colin Montgomerie in the final. 2004 saw the club host the Curtis Cup.

Hesketh Golf Club

Hesketh is the oldest golf club in Southport established in 1885 and is part links and part parkland.  It is regularly chosen as a Qualifying venue when the Open is played at The Royal Birkdale.

Southport and Ainsdale Golf Club                                                                  This course is so impressive that one golf magazine named it among the top 50 courses in Britain.  The entire course is a Site of Specific Scientific Interest.  The traditional feel of the links has been retained through the years and it remains a Qualifying venue for the Open when it is played in the region.

West Lancashire Golf Club

This club has been a final qualifying course for The Open many times.  It is set in natural seaside terrain with immaculate greens.  11 of the holes are over 400yards – a true championship course.

Close to home, in fact just down the road from The Shippon are two golf courses – Hurlston Hall and Ormskirk.

 

Hurlston Hall Golf Club

This course is set in 135 acres of beautiful parkland on the outskirts of Ormskirk.  It is an 18hole Par 72 course designed by David Steel and opened in 1994.  If you just want to go and practice there is also a large floodlit and covered driving range.

Ormskirk Golf Club

This club offers a friendly welcome to all visitors and treats them as members for the day.  The parkland course, set in 125 acres, offers a challenge to all levels of golfers and has been used for Open regional qualifying.
